MMORTS: Céiron Wars Review

Céiron Wars is a free-to-play turn-based MMORTS from the folks behind Céidot Game Studios. Set in the dark fantasy theme and plot involving blood and death, Céiron Wars combines the real-time war strategy gameplay with role-playing elements, creating a new chapter in the fantastically popular RTS games.

The background of Céiron Wars is based on the immensely fictional Céiron universe where two great empires, the Pyroñom Shardom and the Galljan Empire, dominate the northeastern part of Sorién in this blue planet. Since the Pyrokans and the Galons have feuded for generations, the two rival factions battle against each other to rule the nations in the Céiron world. Here begins the war story of challenges and struggles.

You start with creating your new commander on the official website. When choosing your commander’s background, it is important to decide which character to represent you in the game. This is because the origins make a difference to the starting stats of the selected commander. With such RPG element, you can develop your commander by choosing the basic character traits and skills according to your own preference. After selecting your nation, gender, character, avatar appearance and stats, you can jump into the fantasy world to construct your own empire.

In order to bring prosperity to the wilderness, you build functional structures to support your basic development in the surrounding lands, for example, village for workforce, irrigation fields for platinium income, as well as mining for steel and ankhenon productions. These structures have formed a supply network in the game, which become an unceasing flow of resources for the base constructions, building upgrades and army expenses. Without sufficient resources, you base and soldiers won’t grow stronger to defeat your opponents. When your lack of resources, you can visit the trade alliances to exchange manpower and resources.

Another functional structure like public center provides for economic buildings. Caravanserai is used to attract merchants coming to your base while trade center grants local merchants permission to exchange for goods with the foreigners. With merchants, your income gradually increases with their trading. Therefore, the public center determines the economic development of your base.

Meanwhile, you also build strategic buildings to assemble your army for military force, such as barracks, blacksmiths, militaristic science academy and others. The barracks enable you to recruit army units from the military accommodation to engage in battles. The blacksmiths are destined to supply the military equipments. And, the militaristic science academy offers the training and research to strengthen your commander’s leadership.

The architectures in Céiron Wars are highlighted with regional styles of Islamic & Gothic designs, featuring two different races in the dark fantasy environment. However, you need to achieve a certain rank so as to unlock more constructions in Céiron Wars. Through completing the quests given by central government, you raise you rank to keep on advancing the base.

Sometimes, there are no new quests available at the current stage. Hence, you can raid for skulls which are used to prove your strength during the battles against enemy forces in the borderlands. Besides the main quests, you also help solve the missions from Shadow Stings organization, Ska Merchants guild and crimson angels for high level rewards. Actually, both main quests and side quests are somewhat story-driven, illustrating the storyline with a clear tracking of in-game achievements.

Céiron Wars simulates the military tactics and warfare strategies in the gameplay of real-time tactical battles. Before a battle, you can manage the troops and train the units as well. Army management allows you to assemble your own forces in accordance with current situation. In this way, you can assign your soldiers in the vacant slots for campaign, reservation or garrison. If you are short of hands, train your units to replenish the troops.

The settings of loyalty and pride have an influence on your soldiers’ performances in battles. On one hand, your soldier’s loyalty will decrease and eventually disappear if you haven’t visited your base for a long time. As a result, your army will have low combat effectiveness in battlefields. On the other hand, your pride stat is directly affected by the victories you win from the opponent forces. High pride stat not only promotes the trust of your lordship, but provides a bonus to your soldiers in the respect of their basic skills.

You start your turn-based campaigns with time-limited battles in different arenas, including missions, head hunt and alliance battles. Assembled by a set of individual units, your army’s performance relies on your operational strategic commands. It is your choice to decide what army units like janissary (the archer) or red scorpion (the warrior) to participate in the battle, how to position each unit upon the battlefield, whether to move forward or attack opponents, or when to switch to the defensive mode so as to absorb the damage for each turn. If you want to become an assertive commander, devise strategies and tactics to inflict heavy losses on your opponents in the game.

Céiron Wars is now in the phase of open beta testing starting from Feb. 15th, and all of you can join in the MMORTS. At the moment, it seems that rank 7 is the highest level in Céiron Wars. You can look forward to play the PvP, alliance or clan wars in the upcoming expansions. Céiron Wars supports the downloadable version for both PC and Macintosh. The facebook version will soon be available for the browser-based gameplay. Those who want brief information about the background of Céiron universe can visit the official Céiron Wars website.
